AT&T is testing 3D TV technologies in its labs, said Peter Hill, VP of video and converged services at AT&T Labs, in an interview with IPTV News. There’s no surprise there, after the overload of 3D demos at CES last month and the fact that AT&T wants to keep its U-verse pay-TV service ahead of the cablecos in TV technologies.
There’s no doubt the cable and satellite TV services are doing the same. News Corp’s BSkyB has already announced it’ll offer a 3D channel.
"We’re very interested in 3D TV technologies, and we’re actively researching and testing these technologies in our labs today." Hill said in the interview. He added that the company does not have a specific road map it can announce but is "excited about the possibilities for 3D TV in an IPTV environment."
Some industry analysts — maybe even many — remain skeptical about how successful 3D TV will be. After the financial success of "Avatar," it seems certain 3D will be a drawing card for movie theaters. But at home? Well, that’s not so certain.
Hill is responsible for, among other things, video (IPTV) and service concepts and cross platform services such as iPhone Remote DVR, TV everywhere, Caller ID to the TV, Web/TV integration and the like. |
