Sales of MPEG chips (integrated circuits or ICs) that compress and decompress digital video will reach two billion units by 2013, according to In-Stat. The number shows the popularity of devices, especially portable ones that play video files in MPEG format.
"Compression technology continues to improve, offering lower bit rates and higher quality, as well as lower cost and power," said Michelle Abraham, In-Stat analyst. "H.264 compression is finding a home in most new MPEG ICs targeting both line-powered and mobile devices."
In-Stat said Qualcomm is the leading producer of chips in the mobile MPEG codec market for mobile handsets. Zoran, followed closely by Samsung, leads among "Other Mobile Applications."
