Microsoft has been one of the biggest proponents of using the "white spaces" spectrum in the US TV bands for unlicensed wireless broadband, according to a report from Wireless Watch. This has been approved by the FCC but anti-interference mechanisms and commercial devices are still to be finalized.
Now the Windows giant has transferred its attention to India, and executives have met with the country’s regulator, TRAI, to demonstrate how the "white spaces" can be used to provide broadband services at low cost.
Microsoft has developed a platform that will dynamically scan the airwaves for free spaces. "White-Fi is much more powerful than existing Wi-Fi networks and much more cost effective than other broadband technologies such as WiMAX," said Paul Mitchell, a Microsoft general manager. "If a Wi-Fi network can transmit data through 200 feet, White-Fi can take it over two kilometers." |
