Making good on their November agreement, Google and the Spanish-language broadcaster Univision have launched a new YouTube channel that offers full-length TV show episodes and clips of other content from Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision.
Content on the new channel includes some of its more popular shows like "Despierta America," "Escandalo TV" and "Decorando Contigo." The Univision channel will also feature weekly TV show recaps made specifically for the YouTube audience, as well as an overall Univision "best-of" styled program.
YouTube said that this channel marks the "first time Univision programming will be made available on the Web outside of Univision’s properties." Really, the company means that this is the first time all this content is legally available elsewhere on the Web; these shows and Univision’s more popular telenovelas have been available on YouTube for quite some time, but they’re illicitly uploaded by users and eventually pulled down.
It’s a nice grab for YouTube, since it’s getting current programming from Univision. The move could seem like a blow against Hulu and other sites that offer new content soon after air date. The YouTube deal isn’t an exclusive one, though, so the content could end up moving to other sites if it sees success on YouTube.
So far, the content is only available on the Web site version of YouTube. |
